I have heard from several brothers today asking about tonight's meeting. After much discussion with several brothers who are out and about, a review of the current road conditions and the weather forecast, I have decided NOT to cancel this evenings meeting. However, I will not present my budget or Master's statement, saving those for our next stated meeting on Feb. 7, 2011 when the weather is better and more people can attend. We will have a very short meeting and then go home. I know several of you have already sent regrets.

I do not want to put anyone in harm's way. If you do not think you can safely make it to Lodge tonight, then please stay at home in front of a warm fire. Tomorrow may be ugly, so please be safe and let us know if you need anything.

VWB Jack C. Parker was a 60-year Mason and a Brother to many, as well as a member of many Masonic orders and bodies, including the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite and the Order of Eastern Star.

If you want to help set up the Lodge, several of us will be there by 1 p.m. Please pass the word to all of your friends in the Masonic family so we can properly send VWB Jack off to a better place.

VWB Jack Parker (1924-2011)

With heavy heart and tears in my eyes, I regret to inform you that VWB Jack C. Parker has been called home, at long last. I cannot say it was untimely for certainly he lived a long and full life. Jack was my friend, my Brother, my mentor through the degrees and my mentor in learning the funeral/memorial services.

Jack was, I believe, a three-time Past Master of Grays Harbor #52 and a past DDGM of district #16, among other things. He was a 60-year Mason, preceded in death by his wife, Peggy, in 2008.

I will put out information about his services once we know more.

Jack - you are loved and missed. I am fortunate to have known you.

Alas, Brethren, it brings me sadness to pass along that a Harmony Brother, Mark Owen, has passed away. Please keep his widow and family in your thoughts, including his brother, RWB Dave Owen. Mark was raised a Master Mason in 1997 and was 54 years old.

Once information about services is known, we will pass this information along. We expect there will be a Masonic memorial service at Harmony #18 once the details have been determined by the family.

Wow - what a great turn-out and send-off for WB Allen Plue! I think his family is sure that many people were positively affected by Allen over the years. We had about 140 people there, including at least 60 Masons from Lodges all over the area. I also noted MWB Bill Miller and Thurston County Sheriff John Snazza among us, as well. It was a packed house and it was fortunate that we set up chairs in the middle of the Lodge room to accommodate the overflow.

A great thanks to so many of you but especially:

Brian LeBlanc, Jeff Rennaker, WB Ed and Karolyn Woods, WB Kurt and Rachelle Schmid, WB Rod Mason, VWB Paul Cooley, Dave Smarr, Pat Baker, Chris Blume, WB Casper and Kelly LeBlanc and Clint Brown. These folks participated in preparation, set-up, break-down and the service itself.

Olympia #1 was especially well-represented, besides Harmony #18. Thanks, Brothers! I counted 13 Harmony Past Masters there to pay their respects to WB Allen, who was Master in 1990.

Fireworks stand - successful again in 2011!

Thanks so very much to all of who you donated time, sweat (and perhaps tears?) to this year's fireworks stand. You made it a successful fundraiser yet again, keeping the Lodge's finances in order and allowing us to continue charitable programs. Thanks especially to Clint for organizing and running the whole she-bang. There are many Brothers to thank and a few come to mind, in particular:

Tony Randazzo for spearheading the four hours of brush removal between the road and stand
Brian LeBlanc for his expertise in helping to put up the stand and make sure it was secure and waterproof
Andrew Berets of Olympia #1 for donating time for several shifts
Chris Scarr, who worked many shifts, including one FULL day of shifts (12 hours)

Shifts run from 11 a.m. - 3 p.m., 3-7 p.m. and 7 p.m. to midnight

We really need at least six people per shift to cover those busy times that pop up each shift. Please sign up if you are able. And, if you are unable to work that Wednesday but can work another day, WM Ed is on the hook for the whole schedule, as Thurston-Mason Shrine Club President. I know he would appreciate you taking a shift or two on ANY day during Lakefair (13th - 17th).

Allen Plue's memorial service

We expect to have a military honor guard, as Allen was a retired CSM who had served in Special Forces and as General Westmoreland's Sergeant Major. WB Allen Plue has been called home

Brethren, it pains me to pass along that one of most influential Past Masters, mentors and Brothers has passed on to the celestial Lodge above - WB Allen Plue, who was Master of Harmony in 1990.

He had been ready to make this journey for many months and was able to spend time with Brothers as this day approached. As most of you know, Allen was very instrumental in more than Blue Lodge and served for years as Scottish Rite's Olympia Valley Secretary for all bodies of SR. He will be sorely missed. Stand by for information about any services.

He was my first-line signer and the first Mason I met after calling the Lodge out of the phone book back in 2000. I will miss him dearly. Please keep Marge in your thoughts and prayers, in the meantime.

Fellowcraft "G" Lecture

The Wages of a Fellowcraft Mason are Corn, Wine and Oil; the Corn of nourishment, the Wine of refreshment, and the Oil of Joy. The Jewels of a Fellowcraft Mason are the Attentive Ear, the Instructive Tongue and the Faithful Breast; for the Attentive Ear receives the sound from the Instructive Tongue and the Secrets of Freemasonry are safely lodged in the repository of Faithful Breasts. My Brother, I will now direct your attention to the Letter G suspended in the East. The letter G is the initial of Geometry.

Geometry, the first and noblest of sciences, is the basis upon which the superstructure of Freemasonry is erected. By Geometry, we may curiously trace nature through her various windings to her most concealed recesses; by it, we discover the power, wisdom and goodness of the Great Artificer of the Universe, and view with delight the magnificent proportions which compose this vast machine; by it, we trace the movements of the planets in their respective orbits and demonstrate their various revolutions; by it, we account for the change of the seasons, and the variety of scenes which each season displays to the discerning eye. Numberless worlds around us, all framed by the same Divine artist, roll through the vast expanse, and are controlled by the same unerring law of Nature.

A survey of Nature, and the observation of her beautiful proportions, first determined man to imitate the Divine plan and study symmetry and order. This gave rise to societies and birth to every useful art. The architect began to design; and the plans which he laid down, being improved by time and experience, produced worlds which have been the admiration of every age.

The lapse of time, the ruthless hand of ignorance and the devastations of war have laid waste and destroyed many valuable monuments of antiquity, on which the utmost exertions of human genius had been employed. Even the Temple of Solomon, so spacious and magnificent, designed and constructed by so many celebrated artists, escaped not the unsparing ravages of barbarous force. Freemasonry, notwithstanding, still survives. For the Attentive Ear receives the sound from the Instructive Tongue, and the sacred mysteries are safely lodged in the repository of the Faithful Breast.

Tools and implements of architecture, and symbolic emblems most expressive, have been selected by the Fraternity to imprint on the mind serious and solemn truths; and thus, through the succession of ages, have been transmitted, unimpaired, the most excellent tenets of our institution.

My Brother, the letter G has a higher and holier significance. *** It alludes to the sacred name of Deity, before Whom, all, from the youngest Entered Apprentice Mason in the Northeast corner of the Lodge to the Worshipful Master in the East, should, with reverence, most humbly bow.

Another loss for Masonry

Alas, we have just learned that VWB Dick Nyholm of Centralia #63 has passed away. There are no details about any services as of yet. VWB Dick was a wealth of information and mentored many Brothers over the years, including our current DDGM, VWB Clayton LaVigne. Dick always did an amazing job with the Standard Work, including a bang-up job for installations. As a Past DDGM, he was a continuing resource for all the Lodges of our district.

We will pass along more news about services when that information is available. In the meantime, just know that we are fortunate to have had Dick in our lives and that we, and the Craft, were better for his tutelage.

We will meet again in realms beyond the skies. Until then, dear friend and Brother, until then, farewell.

Masonic funeral prayer and benediction

Masonic funeral - ashes

Funeral Services (from Washington Monitor) – Over Ashes of a Brother

Master: From time immemorial it has been a custom of the Society of Free and Accepted Masons, on proper request, to perform the last rites over the remains of a departed Brother.

In conformity with this ancient usage, and in accord with our loving duty to our brother, we are assembled here as Masons to offer tribute of our affection and to testify before the world our faith in the almighty Father and His beneficent goodness to us, His children.

With becoming reverence, then, let us supplicate the Divine Grace to insure the favor of that Eternal Being whose goodness and power know no bounds; that on the arrival of the momentous hour when the fading taper of human life shall faintly glimmer in the socket of our existence, our faith may draw aside the sable curtain, and our hope may sustain and cheer the departing spirit.

Response: So mote it be!

Master: The earthly remains of our brother have been committed to the flames; but his spirit has winged its flight to that blissful Lodge which will remain open during the endless ages of eternity. In that Heavenly Sanctuary, the Mystic Light, unmingled with darkness, will reign unbroken and perpetual; and there, amid the sunbeam-smiles of Immutable Love, under the benignant bend of the All-Seeing Eye, by the Infinite Grace of the Almighty Father, we shall meet again.

LAMBSKIN APRON

Master: (Holding up apron, unfolded) The Lambskin, or white leather apron, is an emblem of innocence, and the badge of a Mason. Its pure and spotless surface is an ever-present reminder of that purity of life so essentially necessary to gaining admission into the Celestial Lodge above. This emblem I now place upon the ashes of our brother, as a symbol of his labors in our Craft, and as a token of our brotherhood with him and our kindred sonship with the Father. (Drops apron, by three distinct pauses, upon the urn.) Thy day of toil on earth, my brother, is over. Thou hast entered upon a greater field of labor and love.

SCROLL

Master: This scroll, on which is inscribed the name of our departed Brother, I now deposit with his remains. He has passed away, never more to return. His name is inscribed in the Book of Life.

THE SPRIG OF ACACIA

Master: (holding up sprig) The Evergreen, which once marked the temporary resting-place of one illustrious in Masonic legend, is an emblem of our faith in the immortality of the soul. By it we are reminded that we have an imperishable, immortal spirit, which survives this death, and which will never, never, never die. By it we are admonished that we, too, like our Brother, whose ashes now lie before us, shall soon be clothed in the habiliments of death; yet, through the loving kindness of the Supreme Grand Master, we may confidently hope that our souls will hereafter flourish in eternal spring.

FUNERAL GRAND HONORS

Master: Reverently we commit the ashes of our Brother to the flame. Master: (Holding up apron, unfolded) The Lambskin, or white leather apron, is an emblem of innocence, and the badge of a Mason. Its pure and spotless surface is an ever-present reminder of that purity of life so essentially necessary to gaining admission into the Celestial Lodge above. This emblem I now place upon the casket of our brother, as a symbol of his labors in our Craft, and as a token of our brotherhood with him and our kindred sonship with the Father. (Drops apron, by three distinct pauses, upon the casket.) Thy day of toil on earth, my brother, is over. Thou hast entered upon a greater field of labor and love.

SCROLL

Master: This scroll, on which is inscribed the name of our departed Brother, I now deposit with his remains (drops it on casket). He has passed away, never more to return. His name is inscribed in the Book of Life.

The Supreme Architect has called Ill. Bro. Walter Breuning (Great Falls #118 - Montana AF&AM) home, after 114 years. He was an 85-yr Mason and the oldest living man in the world.

A myriad of stories about Walter are easily found on a variety of web sites. Here is the link to his Wikipedia entry, and a local story of his passing.

Walter, not too surprisingly, said a few years ago: "If you keep your mind busy and keep your body busy, you're going to be around a long time."

WB Vernon Briggs, Honorary Past Master of Harmony #18, passed on to the Celestial Lodge this week, at the age of 89. His wife of more than 60 years, Evelyn, and his children, were by his side at home.

A celebration of Vernon's life is scheduled at the Olympia Masonic Center:

Saturday, June 12th - 2 p.m.

There is no formal Masonic service planned at this time but all Brothers are welcome. Wear your aprons!

WB Vernon was Treasurer for Harmony #18 from 1994-1998 and had been a Mason since 1969. He will truly be missed as a generous and sweet soul.

WB Ralph Koss, Past Master of Harmony #18 (1983) passed on last week, on February 9th. He and his wealth of Masonic knowledge will be sorely missed. The below appeared in the Olympian.

Ralph Koss 1937 - 2010 Ralph passed away on February 9, 2010 after a courageous battle with emphysema. He was born on March 18, 1937 in Yakima, and grew up in Wapato. He was an Eagle Scout, a Past Master of Harmony Lodge 18, Olympia, a member of Scottish Rite, Tacoma, and Provo Guard in Afifi Shrine, Tacoma. Ralph enjoyed his many years of employment at United Pacific Insurance Company in Tacoma and Sunset Life Insurance Company in Olympia. After his retirement, he enjoyed volunteering at Capital Medical Center in Olympia from 1999-2006. He loved gardening, traveling, and vacationing at Lake Chelan. Ralph is survived by his wife Barbara of nearly 50 years, and a brother, Darrel (Diane) of Ritzville. Donations in Ralph's memory may be sent to Shriners Hospitals for Children, 3101 SW Sam Jackson Park Road, Portland, OR 97239-3009. Ralph requested there be no service.

Annual Ladies' night

On Tuesday, February 16, 2010, Harmony Lodge will be hosting its Annual Ladies' Night Dinner. Masonic wives, families and widows are invited to attend.

On the menu:

Meat Loaf
Baked Potatoes with all the trimmings
Asparagus
Salad
Dessert

Dinner will begin at 6:30 pm. Cost of the dinner is $8 per person with advanced reservations and $10 per person at the door. Masonic widows are free. During dinner, Worshipful Master Kurt Schmid and the officers of Harmony Lodge will discuss the recreational activities they have planned for the families and friends of Harmony Lodge during 2010. Services for WB Warren Husted

Ariel Wilhite has graciously given us a thank you card and a beautiful photo montage, from her trek to Reno, NV last month to the 2009 National Junior Olympic Cross Country Championships.

WB Warren Husted has passed on

Brethren,

I am sad to report that we have lost yet another brother, WB Warren Husted. He was 89 years old, a Harmony #18 Life Member and a Past Master of Terrestrial-Mt. View Lodge #228, in Eatonville. WB Warren recently served as Tyler of Harmony #18 in 2006 and 2007. WB Warren passed away while doing something he and Mary loved: traveling!

Please help us celebrate the life of WB Warren and share your condolences with his family. His services, which will likely be a succession of religious, military and Masonic are scheduled for Thursday, January 14th - 1 p.m.

More details to follow as they are made available through contact with WB Warren's family.

Message from Acting Secretary WB Kris Graap

Brethren,

As requested by WM Ivan, I’ve agreed to serve as Acting Secretary of Harmony Lodge until Secretary-Elect WB Casper LeBlanc is installed in mid-January.

I’m honored to be asked and will do the best I can for the Lodge and for all of you Brothers. I met with former Secretary Rich Lathrope last Monday, and he has graciously turned over all of the records and also provided me an extensive briefing of the matters at hand. While I’m pleased to say that WB Rich left the records in very good shape, it is also the case that much work remains to be performed in the month ahead.

The most immediate need is to take care of dues for 2010, and to disburse dues cards for all members in good standing. As I am in an “acting” capacity, I want to make certain that every member who has paid dues by year-end has his dues card, so as not to leave a headache for WB Casper. On this, I have already mailed out dues cards to every life member.

For those of you that are not life members, you can assist me greatly if you would mail the $60 dues either directly to my home or to the Lodge @ 521 North Street, Tumwater 98501.

Please note three items:

1. If you have any address or other changes, please include them so that we can update the database.

2. Please do NOT send cash! A check or money order provides a paper trial. As a designated hitter, I need that! :-)

3. Your dues for the year 2010 are due on or before January 1, 2010. Keeping your dues current is a great help to the Lodge, and is part of your Masonic obligation.

The second item is that Harmony Lodge has three meetings scheduled - the two stated meetings on December 1 and December 15, and a special meeting slated for December 29. We have a considerable amount of degree work to take care of, so if your cable tow permits we’d sure like to see you!

Lastly, if you have any questions or need to call in regard to Lodge business, please give me a call at 360-493-8878. (I have an answering machine so don’t hesitate to leave me a message.)

From Secretary WB Rich Lathrope:

Every day I scan the Daily Olympian for deaths and obituaries. Today was a particularly sad day because I noted the passing of WB Albert DeYoung. It feels strange but I must be one of the few who remember Al playing the organ in Lodge for so many years. It really makes a difference to have music in Lodge, somehow it makes it brighter and more exciting.

I never heard WB Al ever utter a cross word, he always had praise for everything. In his later years his blindness became total and he did not get out much. Our commiserations go out to Lora, his wife of 60 years.

WB Al joined us from Sunnyside Lodge where he was a Past Master. He was 88 years old and a veteran of the US Air Force.

I will obtain more information on final arrangements and inform you of them later.
